Lovell moved to IUPUI, and took over a basketball program that was in its relative infancy, having only one winning season in 12 years. Lovell's first IUPUI team gained a winning record and advanced to post season play for the first time the school's history. Lovell's 1985 and 1990 teams competed in the NAIA National Tournament, with the 1990 team advancing to the Sweet 16. Lovell directed IUPUI's basketball program for 12 years, and left the school with the most wins in its history.

During 10 of his 12 years at IUPUI, Lovell was also director of athletics and guided the school to unprecedented success. Prior to Lovell's arrival, IUPUI had only one team participate in NAIA National Tournament play. During his tenure as athletic director, 24 teams and individuals competed in NAIA national competitions. Lovell also was instrumental in IUPUI’s transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II.

He was inducted into the IUPUI Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.

In addition to his successful stint at IUPUI, Lovell spent 6 years at the Horizon League, a NCAA Division I conference headquartered in Indianapolis.
